The new book tells the story of Lithuanian notaries before the WW2

2021.10.08

On October 7, 2021, the Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries presented to the legal science community a new book, which is to fill the knowledge gaps about notaries in Lithuania before the Second World War.

The collective study "Notariate of the Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940) and its fate: system, community and personalities" was prepared and published at the initiative of the Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries on the legal science community in Vilnius.

The collective study was written by four scientists of the Faculty of History of Vilnius University: Norbertas Černiauskas, Kęstutis Kilinskas, Giedrė Polkaitė and Marius Ėmužis.

"This book is our consistent step towards perpetuating the professional memory of a notary," says Marius Stračkaitis, President of the Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries and Klaipėda Notary.

The biographies of 45 individuals who worked as notaries during the pre-WW2 period were collected and analyzed from primary archival sources. After the quantitative analysis of the collected data, a collective biography of pre-war Lithuanian notariate was compiled, indicating the most important demographic, political, economic and social features of the professional group of notaries.

The richly illustrated scientific study provides not only quantitative summaries of the data collected, but also detailed notarial biographies that will acquaint the reader with the twists and turns of a notary’s life and career.

The book was published by Studija "Versus" publishing house. The book is available at bookstores.
