Memorial board to pre-WW2 Lithuanian notary and poet uncovered in Birzai

While people were singing aloud songs written to Pranas Lembertas' lyrics, notary Svajonė Šaltauskienė, the member of the Board of Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries, and Mr. Valdemaras Valkiūnas, the Mayor of Birzai municipality, had removed the shroud covering the memorial board, created by prominent Lithuanian sculptor Gediminas Piekuras from granite and stainless steel.

Pranas Lembertas (1897-1967) in the '30s and '40s of the 20th century was a notary in Birzai. Several books of his poetry have been published during his lifetime. Pranas Lembertas was also prominent public figure, an active member in a number of public organizations and societies. He was a talented singer, amateur actor and theatergoer, promoter of tennis and keen player. Lembertas had to flee the Soviet occupation and lived in the US until his death. His remains were reburried in Lithuania in 1997. The 120th anniversary of his birth and 50th anniversary of his death are being commemorated in 2017 by the initiative of Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries.
