The future of the notariat will be determined to a large extent by the current candidates for notaries, or assessors. As many years of experience have shown, the assessorship route is the most effective way to become a notary, and it is lawyers who have completed their assessorship who most often win public competitions for notary positions.
According to the data of the Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries, 45 notaries will end their tenure by the year 2031, when they will reach the age of 70. Their places will have to be taken by a younger generation of legal professionals. At present, 43 assessors are seeking to become notaries, of whom 14 have already completed two years of assessor practice, 9 are awaiting the evaluation of their practice, and 20 are in the process of completing their notarial practice. 32 are women and 11 are men. The oldest assessor is 50 years old and the youngest is 24 years old.
Most assessors work in notary offices, and those who have passed the notary examination represent notaries. In order to get acquainted with the current issues of practice and work of assessors, the President of the Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries Marius Stračkaitis invited them to a meeting in Vilnius on 26 February.
"A notary's success story begins when he is still a assessor, actively participating in the working groups of the notariat," said M. Stračkaitis, who started his career as a notary's assessor a quarter century ago.
He invited assessors to participate very actively in notarial working groups related to the new information technologies and development of the eNotary system. According to the President of the Chamber, previous assessors, who have become notaries now, actively participated in the development and testing of notarial IT solutions. Due to their experience, assessors involved in the daily work of notarial offices can provide many valuable comments and suggestions. M. Stračkaitis spoke about the development of eNotary's capabilities, the creation of an electronic document archive.
M. Stračkaitis also invited assessors to participate as actively as possible in notarial qualification seminars and open events of the European Notariat.
During the question-and-answer session the assessors asked about the known plans for public competitions for notary positions, legislative innovations, development directions of the eNotaras system, practical tips for notary work, preparations for notary exams.
Each year, 10-20 lawyers win the competitions for assessors announced by the Ministry of Justice. After completing a two-year internship and passing the notary examination, they are entitled to represent notaries and to participate in public competitions for notary positions.
