The Lithuanian Notariat has completed its year-long presidency of the Council of the Notariats of the European Union (CNUE). At a ceremony held in Luxembourg on 16 January, the President of the Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries Marius Stračkaitis handed over the presidential mandate to Cosita Delvaux, a notary from Luxembourg, who will head the CNUE for the term of office 2025.
"The year 2024 was a year of respite for the European notariat. We have almost forgotten the pandemic that swept the world five years ago and have returned to the rhythm of work and life. Nor did we face any major legislative challenges due to the 2024 European Parliament elections. These circumstances allowed us to turn our attention last year to the internal issues of our organisation, which require improvement, and to focus on strengthening the position of the notarial profession", said M. Stračkaitis while presenting the results of the activities at the meeting of the Administrative Board of the CNUE.
The priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency were the strengthening of the notarial profession, digitisation of notarial services and support to the Ukrainian notariat.
Cosita Delvaux became the first woman to hold the post of President of the CNUE. Until now, women notaries from EU countries have only held the position of Vice President.
"In terms of gender equality, we are finally catching up with the International Union of Notaries, which previous term had an Argentinian notary Cristina Noemi Armella as President. I believe that the appointment of my esteemed colleague, Cosita Delvaux, a notary from Luxembourg, not only reflects her professionalism, responsibility, diligence and other important qualities and abilities as a notary, but also represents all women notaries in Europe," Stračkaitis said at the ceremony.
The new head of the organisation presented Luxembourg's priorities. 1) Strengthening the protection of vulnerable adults in Europe; 2) Strengthening cybersecurity in notarial activities; 3) Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the European Succession Regulation.
"For 2025, my priorities as President of the CNUE aim to respond to the current challenges of our profession, while exploring opportunities for innovation and cooperation. Continuity will be at the very heart of my Presidency. We will continue to develop key issues such as company law and the digitalisation of justice, in order to adapt our profession to societal and technological developments, while strengthening our role at the service of states, citizens and businesses“, said Ms. Delvaux.
